November 14, 2015 Meeting Details

We are very excited for the upcoming meeting at the Emory University Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library, which is jointly hosted with the English Speaking Union!

Emory's MARBL Library, newly renovated and renamed the Rose Library is graciously hosting us on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 2:00 PM.  The address is:

Emory University Woodruff Library, 10th Floor
540 Asbury Circle, Atlanta, GA 30322
(scroll to the bottom of this post for driving and parking details)

The Library will display some of its holdings of 18th-century books and Jane Austen first editions.

JASNA member and frequent lecturer Professor Patricia Michaelson, PhD, University of Texas will speak on the topic of "How Jane Austen Invented the Novel."  Dr. Michaelson is a professor of Literary Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas, specializing in 19th-century women's lit, and Jane Austen. Austen featured prominently in her first book Speaking Volumes: Women, Reading and Speech in the Age of Austen (Stanford, 2002).

A special thanks to Grace and Randy for organizing this awesome meeting!

Due to limited space, please email ee@jasnaatlanta.org to RSVP for a headcount.  We do not want anyone to miss out!

DIRECTIONS:
Please visit Emory's website for detailed directions to the Rose Library

PARKING DETAILS:
Visitors to Emory may park in one of three visitor parking decks: Fishburne, Oxford Road, and Peavine. Fishburne is located closest to the Woodruff library building.

Fishburne parking deck: This is the preferred place to park and is located between Glenn Memorial Church and the Schwartz Center. From North Decatur Road, proceed around the traffic circle to the main entrance of the University (Dowman Drive) and take an immediate right on Fishburne Drive and follow it to the three way stop. Proceed straight ahead and turn right into the Fishburne parking deck, the closest visitor parking to the Woodruff Library. To get to the library, exit the parking deck and turn left. Take the first right (on Fishburne Drive). Proceed straight across a bridge toward the triangular entrance that leads into the Carlos Museum. At the triangular entrance, turn right and follow the sidewalk to the over pass between two buildings. The entrance to Woodruff Library is under the right-hand side of the overpass.

October JASNA Meeting

Please come to our meeting this Saturday to hear all the details and see the pictures taken by our intrepid travelers at the AGM.

Unfortunately, there was a last minute misunderstanding with the Toco Hills Library reservation.  Fortunately, the Chamblee library, just up the road on Clairmont Road, is able to host us the same day, just earlier in the day.  PLEASE NOTE THE LOCATION AND TIME CHANGE:

Saturday, October 17 at 11AM
Chamblee Library
4115 Clairmont Rd
Chamblee, GA 30341

This library is near the Peachtree-Dekalb Airport, and the parking is in the rear.  Please call me if you need any help with directions: (404) 317-3341.

I will bring coffee and pastries.  I hope to see all of you there!

August 2015 Meeting Notice

We will meet August 15, 2015 at 2pm at the Toco Hills Library for a back to school lesson!

We will continue reading the juvenilia by discussing Jane Austen's History of England.  It is a very short satire written by "a partial, prejudiced, & ignorant Historian" outlining the reigns of Henry IV to Charles I.  You can read the full text of it here: http://penelope.uchicago.edu/austen/austen.html

Cassandra  illustrated Jane's entries with portraits of the kings and queens.  Persuasions published a fascinating article about Cassandra's portraits here at: Are We Ready for New Directions?  Jane Austen’s The History of England & Cassandra’s Portraits.

Also, we will take a brief quiz/review of the state of the English monarchy and royal shenanigans during Jane's life.

We hope to see you there!  Please e-mail ee @ jasnaatlanta.org with any questions.

Box Hill Picnic 2015

JASNA Georgia celebrated its annual Box Hill Picnic in June at Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground, GA.

May JASNA Meeting

For May's meeting, in celebration of Mother's Day, we will meet to discuss one of the most exemplary mothers in English literature: Lady Susan Vernon.  I hope you have time to re-read Jane's epistolary novella Lady Susan for a fun discussion of this work!

When: Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 2:00 pm

Where: Zen Tea, historic downtown Chamblee, 5356 Peachtree Rd, Atlanta, GA 30341

Welcome to the Atlanta Region of JASNA!

Our members meet regularly throughout the year to enjoy lectures, attend events, and discuss the works, life, and times of Jane Austen (1775-1817). We meet on the weekends so that people living farther out from the city will be able to attend more easily. We hope you will join us! info@JasnaAtlanta.org.
